Despite continual reports linking Sir Alex Ferguson to Inter Milan star Wesley Sneijder, the Manchester United boss insists he isn’t targeting the playmaker in his summer transfer plans.
Sneijder has long been connected with a move to Old Trafford, though Ferguson last week denied speculation that the Italian was closing in on a move to the red part of Manchester.
And now the manager has simply told reporters to ‘forget’ the notion of Sneijder making a move, insisting that there are no big signings on the horizon fo United, after Phil Jones, Ashley Young and
David de Gea joined the club within the first month of the transfer window.
“There’s nothing on the horizon at the moment, so we carry on with the players we’ve got,” said the United boss. “I’m not going to talk about that [Sneijder], it’s not an issue. It’s just difficult.
“We lost five experienced players in the summer. Five players who gave the club great service – Wes Brown, John O’Shea, Edwin van der Sar, Paul Scholes, Gary Neville.
“At the time, you think it’s a big slice out of the cake, but we have replaced them by adding De Gea, Jones and Young, and also bringing back Danny Welbeck and Tom Cleverley, who were on loan [at Sunderland and Wigan respectively].”
Ferguson has made his intentions to rebuild the United squad this summer, despite the side winning the title last season and making the Champions League final. And the Scot points out that signings so far, along with the return of Tom Cleverley and Danny Welbeck, will signal the rebirth of an already very successful side.
“We’ve actually got 12 players aged 22 or under with us now, so it could be an emerging team again,” added Ferguson, who is also excited about the prospect of Javier Hernandez going on to achieve even bigger and better things after his amazing debut season.
A bargain buy at £8m, Chicarito took the Premier League and Europe by storm, and Sir Alex says: “Javier is as good a player as I have ever dealt with in the penalty box in terms of movement, space and decision making. He is brilliant with those qualities.
“He might even improve on that next year. Where he does need to improve is the technical bit. He is doing that all the time, though.”
Hernandez, 23, followed up his title-winning season with United by taking the CONCACAF Gold Cup with Mexico.
His displays mesmerised Ferguson, who added: “When I watched him in the Gold Cup, the change in him was fantastic in terms of how he was linking play, spinning his defender.
“For one of his goals, the centre back went to check him but Chicho stepped away, went round the back and he was in. His decision making is brilliant in that but I’m sure he will go on to improve and make himself better.”
