Chelsea could be about to break their own transfer record to land Porto striker Hulk, after a £70 million pound mystery offer was rejected for the player.
Two other big spending clubs are said to be in the running for the Brazilian forward, who can also play in the wide positions as part of a 4-3-3 formation, with Manchester City and AC Milan both mentioned as possible bidders for the player.
Andre Villas-Boas is said to be looking for some wide talent to feed front man Fernando Torres with the supply he needs to start scoring regularly for the Blues.
Hulk – whose real name is Givanildo Vieira de Souza – has been cited alongside Manchester City’s wide man Adam Johnson as a player likely to fit the role at Stamford Bridge, although a higher offer will be needed if the Blues are to land their target.
The bid rejection was revealed by Hulk’s agent, Teodoro Fonseca, who hinted that there were very few clubs that could afford the money involved.
Fonseca said: “I would be lying if I said no proposals have emerged to sign Hulk.
“I think the highest bid was €80million, but Porto did not even want to negotiate. I cannot reveal [which club made the offer].
“But it is not hard to see because there are only three or four clubs who are able to present those kind of numbers for a player.”
Hulk, who has scored 36 goals in 70 appearances for Primeira Liga winners Porto, is said to have a whopping £89.5 million release clause in his contract.
If Chelsea were to meet this it would beat their own Barclays Premier League transfer record, set after signing Torres for £50 million, and top the world record set by Real Madrid’s acquisition of Christiano Ronaldo from Manchester United, who left for £80 million.
