Premier League Live: McLeish makes it with fans

Aston Villa’s Alex McLeish was satisfied with his pre-season victory against local League One side Walsall, but would have liked to have given the fans some more goals.

Villa put in three goals against the Saddlers’ one, and McLeish, who is eager to please the fans at Villa Park, was also happy enough with his players.

The Scotsman’s move to Aston Villa from local rival Birmingham City had caused a bit of a stir, but the fans who made the short journey to Banks’s stadium were welcoming.

“I’m sure it was at the back of my mind,” said McLeish in anticipation of the reception. “But you’ve got to confront it and face whatever comes your way.

“I’ve had to do a wee bit of that over the last few weeks so it was a nice reception, it was terrific.

“The goals were good – they were worked well. I was delighted the fans got to see some goals – although I thought they could have seen more.”

Darrent Bent scored the two opening goals, and Emile Heskey rounded off the three goal lead, but Shay Given was unable to keep a clean sheet on his debut after letting in a late header from George Bowerman.

“It was good. I was pleased with the players, how they went about it, they played with good tempo. They tried to get the ball out early to the speed of Emile, to the movement of Benty who again showed his quality in the box.

“I was pleased with the attitude of the players but I have been ever since I took on the post,” he continued. “The attitude of the players has been outstanding. That has been really impressive.”
