Premier League Live: Reds plot surprise Anfield return for Academy graduate reports

Liverpool are reportedly considering making a move for Aston Villa defender Stephen Warnock to plug their problematic left-back role.

According to Metro, the Reds see Warnock as a potentially cheaper alternative to Newcastle’s Jose Enrique, who was intially installed as the favourite to move to Merseyside.

But it would appear that Warnock could return to Liverpool, four years after leaving Anfield for Blackburn.

Warnock, 29, made his Liverpool debut in 2002, having successfully graduated from the club’s famous Academy, but found it difficult to hold down a regular starting place over John Arne Riise.

He was subsequently sold by Liverpool to Blackburn in 2007, and then joined Villa two years later.

Warnock had been linked with a return to Anfield in January, as struggled to get a look in under former Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier at Villa Park.

Whether or not Liverpool retain a genuine interest in Warnock remains to be seen, but the acquisition of an established left-back is a summer priority for Kenny Dalglish.
