Premier League Live: Liverpool 'to step up' Spanish defender interest reports

Liverpool are reportedly ready to step up their interest in Newcastle United defender Jose Enrique.

The Spanish left back has been linked with an Anfield move for much of the summer, although the Magpies revealed yesterday that an offer is yet to be received for the 25-year-old.

However, the Sunday People claims Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish is looking to bolster his defence after frailties were exposed in pre-season following back-to-back 3-0 defeats.

The Merseysiders went down to Hull City before losing to Galatasaray in Istanbul, and will be looking for an improvement against Valerenga tomorrow.

After investing heavily in the transfer window, with big-money spent on Jordan Henderson and Charlie Adam, the Liverpool hierarchy will be hoping for an improved return when the season begins on August 13th.

Dalglish is known to be in the market for a player in the left back position, with Paul Konchesky leaving Anfield and the club yet to find a replacement.

Stephen Warnock has also been linked with a move to Liverpool, although Enrique is believed to be the club’s main priority.

The British national paper claims Liverpool are ready to wait until the later stages of the summer before making their move if necessary, and will be hoping to secure a cut-price deal.
