Wayne Rooney insists he is very happy at Manchester United, and would not contemplate leaving the club for anywhere in England or abroad, despite expressing a wish to move to pastures new midway through last season.
The England striker publicly admitted he could leave United, but had a change of heart after talks with Sir Alex Ferguson, and has remained committed to the club’s cause ever since, contributing to a record 19th title for the side and scoring against Barcelona in United’s 3-1 defeat in the Champions League final.
And now the 26-year-old says that he won’t ever consider leaving Manchester, having settled in the area with his family and with the unmistakable magic that Old Trafford brings to any footballer.
“I’ve never thought about leaving,” Rooney told Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport. “My family and I are happy in Manchester and England. I have no reason to leave. Even when I played for Everton, I’d look forward to making the trip to Old Trafford.”
Rooney admitted that next season’s title race will be more open than in recent years, with United now competing with five other sides, rather than being considered one of the big four. “There are at least five or six teams that will compete for the title this year, including Manchester City,” he added.
“But in the Premier League, more so than in other countries, you have to work hard even when you face teams towards the bottom of the table.”
Dimitar Berbatov, last season’s top scorer in the league along with Carlos Tevez, was instrumental in United’s 4-0 win against the MLS All Stars.
There were five goal scorers in total, including Rooney, against the Seattle Sounders, showing United’s forward potential in the 7-0 win.
“We know there’s a lot of competition for places with the strikers this season,” said Rooney after the win a week ago.
“We all need to make sure we keep working hard and fight for the one or two places available.”
