Arsenal are on the verge of bringing ‘Japanese Messi’ Ryo Miyaichi into the fold at the Emirates this season, but will face renewed offers from Feyenoord, where the player spent the end of last season on loan.
Ryo Miyaichi, who at just 18 -years-old has been compared to the likes of Ronaldinho (with the nickname Ryodinho) and Messi, was signed by the Gunners in January but sent on loan to the Dutch side, who are looking to retain the player for another season.
Wenger is believed to be keen to introduce Miyaichi, who has a 100m sprint time of 10.84 seconds, to Arsenal’s attacking line-up next after involving the youngster in pre-season.
All that stands in the way is a work permit, and a renewed offer from the 14 times champions of the Eredivisie.
“Arsenal are waiting for a yes or no on the application of a work permit for Ryo,” explained the Feyenoord technical director Martin Van Geel.
“In mid-August, they hope to obtain an answer about it and I’m actually planning to fly to London.”
“We’re not so strong in terms of our attackers. Ryo can actually deal with all positions up front.
“In regards to the left wing, that is doubly occupied. But for all other places up front we could do with strengthening.”
The Japanese player is yet to break into the international senior side, but he impressed English counterpart Theo Walcott, who also joined Arsenal at a young age.
“I don’t like comparing myself to other players, every player is different,” the 22-year-old said.
“He wants to be his own player, he is a confident lad and will hopefully have a good career at Arsenal.
“He has got a few stepovers more than me, I don’t do any! That is maybe something I could bring into my game.
Walcott, who runs the 100m five tenths faster than the Japanses winger, wasn’t worried about the new threat though.
He said: “If I don’t come top [of the speed tests in pre-season] I’m not bothered because the most important thing is doing it on the pitch. But it will be tough to beat me, that is for sure!”
