Q&A: What was the longest penalty shootout in professional football?

Question by DJ Rizla: What was the longest penalty shootout in professional football?

If a football match can’t be decided after extra time and after 5 penalties each they still can’t be seperated, it goes into sudden death. But what if they still match each other, goal for goal? How long can a shoutout go on for?

I’m sure I remember seeing one where everyone eventually had to take a penalty, even the goalkeepers. But what is the longest a penalty shootout has gone on for?

The 1988-89 Argentine Championship, penalties were taken after drawn matches for an extra point. In the match on November 20 1988 between Argentinos Juniors and Racing Club, which had finished 2-2, 44 penalties were taken before Argentinos emerged as 20-19 victors.
