Premier League Live: Gunners still hopeful talismanic skipper will stay

For Arsenal fans the transfer window is invariably a time of waiting, wondering and worrying whether any of their star turns will be wearing the famous red and white come the start of the new season.

Cesc Fabregas, predictably, continues to be linked with Barcelona as the Gunners faith WAIT for the Spanish giants to make their next move….WONDER if Fabregas will finally return to his homeland…and WORRY where the hell they are going to find a suitable replacement given the worse case scenario.

So far, Arsenal have been standing firm and, having rejected an initial offer for Fabregas, believed to be in the region of £26m, the Emirates hierarchy remain hopeful that their talismanic skipper – together with Samir Nasri – will stay loyal to the club.

Chairman Peter Hill-Wood says he’s heard nothing from Barcelona in recent weeks, and says: “I am not sure how keen they are. There are still stories in the Spanish press, but they don’t talk to us.

“They’ve made one offer, which works out at around £26m, but that was ages ago. But at the moment our situation is very straight-forward: we don’t want to lose him. Obviously if they come up with an offer which was a very good offer we would have to think about it.

“We have told them a number of times that what they are proposing is unacceptable and yet they haven’t moved on it. I don’t approve of what they are doing, but unfortunately it seems the way of the world right now.”

The Fabregas-Barca stories have been running for years, and the Arsenal chairman finds them as tedious as the rest of us. “It has become a real bore and an unnecessary interruption to what we are trying to achieve,” added Hill-Wood.

Hill-Wood also revealed he is not happy with Manchester City’sYour browser may not support display of this image. pursuit of Nasri.Your browser may not support display of this image. “City seem to have more money than anybody else, and they keep splashing it around all over the place,” added Hill-Wood. “But our position is very straightforward: we don’t want the player to leave.”
