Premier League Live: Henry makes triumphant return

Arsenal were booed by their own fans after letting another lead slip to surrender the Emirates Cup with a 1-1 draw against Thierry Henry’s New York Red Bulls.

As in Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Boca Juniors, who they had led 2-0, Arsenal were unable to close out a game they had dominated, with substitute Kyle Bartley putting through his own net six minutes from time.

That was after Robin van Persie had put the tournament hosts on course for a fourth Emirates Cup success out of five when he nodded home shortly before half-time.

The Red Bulls made just four changes from the side which surprised Paris St Germain on Saturday. One of the them was Henry, who was treated to a hero’s welcome on his return to the Emirates. The Gunners’ all-time top scorer took just seven minutes to make an impact, screwing a low shot wide.

After Henry’s free-kick forced an acrobatic save from Wojciech Szczesny, Ramsey missed a glorious chance to put Arsenal ahead, blazing over after superb trickery from Van Persie caused chaos in the visitors’ box.

The Emirates was virtually full but those inside suggested they were not getting their money’s worth by starting a Mexican wave shortly before the break. They were on their feet for the right reasons three minutes before half-time, Tomas Rosicky’s straight free-kick flighted perfectly for Van Persie to nod home past a stranded Rost.

Van Persie wasted another chance immediately after the restart, electing to square the ball when he should have shot. He was then denied an easy finish by a brilliant sliding interception by former Barcelona defender Rafael Marquez after brilliant skill down the left by Benik Afobe.

Van Persie and Gervinho combined to force another stop from Rost before they were replaced by Marouane Chamakh and Carlos Vela for the final 25 minutes.

Arsenal’s habit of tossing away leads had resurfaced on Saturday and they were almost caught on the break when Henry sent a trademark sidefoot effort too close to Szczesny.

And after a swathe of substitutions, they failed to heed the warning as the Red Bulls snatched an unlikely draw. Henry was the inspiration, threading in substitute Juan Agudelo, whose cross was turned into his own net by Bartley.

Premier League Live: Reds plot surprise Anfield return for Academy graduate reports

Liverpool are reportedly considering making a move for Aston Villa defender Stephen Warnock to plug their problematic left-back role.

According to Metro, the Reds see Warnock as a potentially cheaper alternative to Newcastle’s Jose Enrique, who was intially installed as the favourite to move to Merseyside.

But it would appear that Warnock could return to Liverpool, four years after leaving Anfield for Blackburn.

Warnock, 29, made his Liverpool debut in 2002, having successfully graduated from the club’s famous Academy, but found it difficult to hold down a regular starting place over John Arne Riise.

He was subsequently sold by Liverpool to Blackburn in 2007, and then joined Villa two years later.

Warnock had been linked with a return to Anfield in January, as struggled to get a look in under former Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier at Villa Park.

Whether or not Liverpool retain a genuine interest in Warnock remains to be seen, but the acquisition of an established left-back is a summer priority for Kenny Dalglish.

Premier League Live: Liverpool 'to step up' Spanish defender interest reports

Liverpool are reportedly ready to step up their interest in Newcastle United defender Jose Enrique.

The Spanish left back has been linked with an Anfield move for much of the summer, although the Magpies revealed yesterday that an offer is yet to be received for the 25-year-old.

However, the Sunday People claims Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish is looking to bolster his defence after frailties were exposed in pre-season following back-to-back 3-0 defeats.

The Merseysiders went down to Hull City before losing to Galatasaray in Istanbul, and will be looking for an improvement against Valerenga tomorrow.

After investing heavily in the transfer window, with big-money spent on Jordan Henderson and Charlie Adam, the Liverpool hierarchy will be hoping for an improved return when the season begins on August 13th.

Dalglish is known to be in the market for a player in the left back position, with Paul Konchesky leaving Anfield and the club yet to find a replacement.

Stephen Warnock has also been linked with a move to Liverpool, although Enrique is believed to be the club’s main priority.

The British national paper claims Liverpool are ready to wait until the later stages of the summer before making their move if necessary, and will be hoping to secure a cut-price deal.

Premier League Live: Super Mario inspires City win

Manchester City have lifted the Dublin Super Cup with a clinical 3-0 win over Inter Milan.

Mario Balotelli, so often the villain since he swapped the Nerazzurri for City, was the star of the show, opening the scoring on the stroke of half-time after a fine first-half performance.

Edin Dzeko netted a second immediately after the restart and Adam Johnson wrapped things up in injury time, as new signing Sergio Aguero watched on from the sidelines.

The impressive performance allowed City to prepare for next weekend’s Community Shield clash with Manchester United in style, and they were rarely in trouble after taking a grip on the game from the off.

David Silva thought he had given them a second-minute lead when he slotted home under Julio Cesar, but the officials deemed that Balotelli’s run across the goalkeeper came from an offside position. Balotelli then headed over, before he and Yaya Toure were denied by Cesar.

City continued to attack and Dzeko converted an Aleksandar Kolarov cross, only to turn and see the flag raised once more – this time incorrectly. Balotelli would not be denied before the break, though, powering a header into the top corner after Cesar had saved from him at his near post.

Dzeko made it two seconds after the restart, finishing clinically after Silva’s smart reverse pass, before Cesar saved again from the same player.

Inter threatened briefly when Joe Hart clawed Wesley Sneijder’s deflected free-kick over the crossbar, before City wrapped things up, with Shaun Wright-Phillips forcing his way into the box before squaring for the waiting Johnson.

Manager Roberto Mancini praised Balotelli afterwards, and also confirmed Aguero would start the United game on the bench. He told Sky Sports 2: “(Mario) has class, he has everything. If his concentration is in his head, he can play like this.”

He added: “This week for Sergio will be recovery. He did the Copa America and finished only two weeks ago. He will be ready to come on the bench next week.”

Premier League Live: Houston: Goodwillie close to move

Dundee United manager Peter Houston expects striker David Goodwillie to complete his move to Blackburn on Monday.

The 22-year-old was left out of the United squad for Sunday’s 1-0 win at Hearts after Rovers agreed a fee – believed to be £2million up front, another £800,000 of potential add-ons and a sell-on clause – with the Clydesdale Bank Premier League club.

“I’m led to believe he’s just about there with Blackburn,” said Houston, who knew nothing of reported fresh bids from SPL champions Rangers.

“I told the chairman from Saturday I didn’t want to hear anything that was going on.

“I know I’m losing David, I knew David wasn’t going to be playing and I wanted to focus on the Hearts game.

“I just spoke briefly to the chairman and he says it’s almost there and it could happen Monday. I don’t think it will happen today (Sunday).

“It’s getting there.”

Premier League Live: Blues weigh up fresh Modric bid

Chelsea will decide this week whether to make a renewed bid for Luka Modric, chief executive Ron Gourlay has revealed.

The Blues have had two offers rejected for the Tottenham playmaker this summer, reportedly of £22million and £27million. Spurs have repeatedly insisted Modric is not for sale but the Croatia star is said to have handed in a transfer request, accusing chairman Daniel Levy of reneging on a gentleman’s agreement to allow him to leave.

Gourlay told Sky Sports News: “I don’t like talking about players from other clubs, but that’s something we’ll look at during the week and we’ll take it from there.”

He added: “We really need to sit down with Andre (Villas-Boas) and talk this through. Even though we’ve been travelling away, you can still be active in the marketplace nowadays.

“The communication is always there with our guys back in London or wherever they are at the present time around the world.”

Big-money signings have been conspicuous by their absence at Chelsea so far this summer, with Villas-Boas keen to assess his current squad and avoid panic buys.

The Blues have won all of their pre-season games under the Portuguese without conceding a goal, gradually improving the level of their performances.

But there is little doubt they would benefit from greater subtlety in midfield, something that could be provided by Modric, who missed Tottenham’s friendly at Brighton on Saturday through illness.

Premier League Live: Kean buoyed by Formica progress

Boss Steve Kean hopes Mauro Formica can make an impact for Blackburn this season after seeing the Argentinian grab the first goal in their 3-0 win over Kitchee on Saturday

Formica headed home Brett Emerton’s cross after 34 minutes at Hong Kong Stadium before second-half efforts from David Dunn and Nick Blackburn sealed third place in the Barclays Asia Trophy.

“When he first came to the club it was difficult because he had to change not only to the method of training at the club but also the intensity of the league,” said Kean.

“Even Michel Salgado’s been quoted in the past that to change from a foreign league to the intensity of the Premier League is very, very tough, it even took Michel three or four months.

“For Mauro and Ruben Rochina, I think they’ve adjusted to the intensity, they’re working really well and it’s like getting two new players because they never featured too much in the first-team last year.

“They’re certainly showing signs they’re well up to speed and that can only be good for everybody.”

Dunn echoed Kean’s assessment of Formica, adding that he is hopeful the club’s youth policy can pay dividends this season.

“Mauro, he came in last year and by his own standard was a little bit off the pace but he’s come back in this year and he looks a totally different player,” he said.

“He’s obviously worked very hard on his fitness over the summer, which is a credit to him.

“Nick Blackburn is another young player that’s coming through, we’re very lucky at the club to have a good crop of young players coming through. Unfortunately Phil Jones left but he’s one of many so hopefully they can step up to the plate.”

Have Middlesbrough got the best U18s ticket policy in the Premier League?

Question by Yellabowley: Have Middlesbrough got the best U18s ticket policy in the Premier League?

Middlesbrough already have some of the cheapest season tickets in the Premier League but this season they decided that all under 18s season tickets would cost just 95 in an attempt to drum up support for the future. That is anywhere in the ground and you do not have to be accompanied by an adult (within reason) Is this the best deal for U18s in the Premier League or are others doing similar?

1878 – I’m pretty sure they sold something like an extra 4000 season tickets so they’ve not done too badly.

Premier League Live: Fergie delighted with De Gea

Sir Alex Ferguson is convinced he has made exactly the right move by spending £18million on 20-year-old keeper David De Gea.

The summer signing from Atletico Madrid came through his first significant test in Saturday night’s 2-1 win over Barcelona in Washington without a problem.

“Replacing Edwin van der Sar is very difficult,” said Ferguson. “He was a great goalkeeper. But the benefit we have with De Gea is that he is only 20.”

He added: “The qualities that stood out for us are his great composure and use of the ball.

“He is quick and agile, which is something we banked on.

“When we assessed him I thought he was the right goalkeeper to take.”

Premier League Live: Toure targets European dream

Yaya Toure believes Manchester City will prove they are worthy of a place in the European elite this season.

Toure joined City from Champions League winners Barcelona last summer and, after a promising first season that saw Roberto Mancini’s side finish fourth in the Barclays Premier League, the midfielder now expects to see the Eastlands club operating at a similar level to the Spanish giants.

“Last season I was asked to compare City to my former club Barcelona. I responded by saying that I thought City could be as good as Barca one day,” he told the Daily Star Sunday. “When I said City could be as good, I truly believed it and I still do. We have a way to go to match those teams but it is our aim.”

He added: “With the ambition that the club has shown in the last few seasons and the way we are improving as a group, I think other clubs are now starting to take notice of the new Manchester City.

“We have shown we can match and beat the best in the Premier League and the next step is to do that in Europe too.”

Premier League Live: Lee blow for Bolton

Bolton midfielder Lee Chung-yong will be out for a minimum of nine months after breaking his leg in Saturday’s pre-season friendly at Newport.

The 23-year-old South Korea international underwent a successful operation after sustaining a double fracture of his lower right leg during Wanderers’ 3-1 win in south Wales. He was carried off on a stretcher midway through the first half following a rash challenge from Tom Miller.

The club posted a statement on their website confirming he was recovering in hospital and was expected to be sidelined for the bulk of the 2011-12 campaign.

Premier League Live: Scudamore upbeat on technology

Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore is optimistic that goal-line technology can soon be introduced into the English top flight with all 20 clubs keen on the idea as long as it is implemented correctly.

FIFA are due to finally rule on the issue next March, meaning the technology could feasibly be in place for the start of the 2012-13 Premier League season.

Scudamore said: “It’s out of our hands. FIFA, quite rightly, have said we’re going to set some strict criteria because if it’s going to work, it’s got to be accurate and it’s got to be timely. It’s got to be done almost instantly and we agree with that because it’s an interruption in play. We don’t want the play stopped if it’s in real time and it didn’t go over the line, the game should carry on.”

He added: “So we agree with all of that. FIFA have now laid out a timeline, they’re going to have a meeting in March and our hope is there will be a number of technology companies who are prepared to put some investment in to demonstrate that it does work.

“FIFA will hopefully approve those companies as having met the criteria which gives us the choice then to go and discuss whose technology we might use at our grounds.

“All we do know is the clubs unanimously want to do it as long as the technology is proven to be fast, accurate and affordable and we’re in a fortunate position in the Premier League where it’s more likely to be affordable to us than it is many other leagues.”

Scudamore did, however, rule out following cricket’s example and extending technological assistance to other areas of the game.

“I think it’s more difficult to think about the use of technology in other scenarios because of the subjectivity of it and it’s about the opinion of a match official,” he added.

“I don’t think it should be the opinion of a match official whether the ball was over the line or not because that’s something we can prove.

“Whether it was a foul or penalty or not, these are harder things to be so precise about so one would probably leave that at the discretion of the match officials, who in the main do a very good job, the accuracy level of linesmen is incredible.”

Premier League Live: Ten-man Inter sink Hoops

Celtic were beaten 2-0 by Inter Milan in an ill-tempered friendly match at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin.

Luc Castaignos gave the Nerazzurri an early lead in the Dublin Super Cup encounter with a well-taken goal and Giampaolo Pazzini added the Italian side’s second moments after they had Thiago Motta sent off.

Neil Lennon’s team, who actually began their Clydesdale Bank Premier League campaign last weekend, were unable to find a way past goalkeeper Luca Castellazzi when they did manage to break down the Inter defence.

Inter claimed the lead in the seventh minute as Goran Pandev played a one-two before slotting a pass through to Dutch forward Castaignos, who gave Celtic goalkeeper Lukasz Zaluska no chance at his near post.

The temperature rose even higher in a tetchy friendly when Motta was sent off for a challenge on Brown, although the 10 men extended their lead seconds later.

A ball over the top caught out the Celtic defence and Pazzini got to the ball before Zaluska to prod it home right at the end of the first half.

In the day’s earlier match, Manchester City beat an Airtricity XI 3-0 with Shaun Wright-Phillips and Adam Johnson the most impressive performers for the Blues.

Wright-Phillips gave Roberto Mancini’s men the lead eight minutes into the second period as he latched on to a chip over the Irish defence by Gareth Barry.

Johnson applied a similarly cool finish when City’s summer signing Stefan Savic played the ball over the top and trialist Luca Scapuzzi sealed the win late on.

Celtic will take on the Airtricity XI on Sunday while Inter face City next.

Premier League Live: Arsenal rue defensive errors

Arsenal blew a two-goal lead and face more questions about their defensive frailties ahead of the new season after Boca Juniors battled to a 2-2 draw in the Emirates Cup on Saturday afternoon.

Arsenal showed little sign of missing Cesc Fabregas as summer signing Gervinho impressed to set up Robin van Persie for the opening goal on 27 minutes, with Aaron Ramsey doubling the lead at the start of the second half.

However, the Gunners once again hit the self-destruct button at the back as mistakes from Sebastien Squillaci and Johan Djourou were punished when the Argentinian side struck twice in four minutes.

While Wenger still has time to put things right before the action kicks off for real at Newcastle in a fortnight’s time, Gunners fans will be hoping that comes via the arrival of a new centre-half – with Everton’s Phil Jagielka a target – rather than relying on his current backline not to make the same mistakes again.

Ivory Coast forward Gervinho had impressed on his first Arsenal appearance, scoring twice in Cologne last weekend, and along with fellow new arrival defender Carl Jenkinson was named in a starting XI which also featured fit-again goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski and contract rebel Samir Nasri, yet to sign a new deal.

The hosts made the breakthrough on the half hour, Gervinho the provider. The £11million forward got away down the left flank and crossed for van Persie, who slotted home at the near post.

Arsenal extended their lead straight after kick-off in the second half when substitute Ramsey drilled home from 20 yards after a penetrating run from Carlos Vela.

But on 68 minutes Lucas Viatri riffled the ball into the top corner after Juan Riquelme had robbed Squillaci.

Another defensive blunder allowed Boca Juniors to equalise when Djourou fell over a ball into the Arsenal penalty area and Pablo Mouche swept home.

Arsenal face New York Red Bulls on Sunday, with Thierry Henry’s side having beaten Paris St Germain 1-0 earlier in the day.

Premier League Live: McCoist off the mark

Steven Naismith grabbed his second goal of the season as Ally McCoist celebrated his first competitive win as Rangers manager with a 2-0 victory against St Johnstone in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League.

Nikica Jelavic was also on target in Perth as the Scottish champions went some way to making amends for last week’s draw with Hearts and the reverse against Malmo in Tuesday’s Champions League qualifier at Ibrox.

Rangers will now hope this win provides a much-needed boost ahead of their trip to Sweden this coming week where they must overcome a 1-0 deficit to keep alive their hopes of a place in the group stages.

Premier League Live: Barca star wants United skipper at Nou Camp

Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes says it would be an ‘honour’ if Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic made an unlikely move to the Nou Camp.

“We always strive for the highest goals at Barcelona and look forward to when the world’s best players come to us,” Valdes told Sportski Portal.

“So is the case with Nemanja Vidic, who is certainly one of the best defensive players in the world, perhaps the best.

“It would be my honour if he came to Camp Nou to command our defence.”

Whether or not Barca actually harbour a genuine interest in Vidic remains to be seen but, even if they did, there would surely be no chance United would sell the 29-year-old.

Meanwhile, United and Barca meet tomorrow as both clubs ramp up their respective pre-season preparations.

The Champions League finalists will renew acquaintances in Washington DC, with United no doubt keen to see a reverse of May’s encounter at Wembley.

Sir Alex Ferguson certainly hopes his troops can strike a psychological blow on Saturday, although the United boss was happy to admit Barca are undoubtedly the world’s best side at this moment in time.

“In everyone’s mind they are the best team, currently, in the world,” said the Old Trafford supremo.

“I’m quite happy to be in second place at this moment in time because that’s our challenge. Our challenge will be to get to that level.”

Premier League Live: Reo-Coker sets sights on England

Nigel Reo-Coker is aiming to put himself back in the frame for England after joining Bolton this week.

The midfielder, a former England under-21 captain, has been on the verge of a call-up to the senior squad in the past and last year rejected an invitation to play for Sierra Leone.

Asked if he had his sights set on reviving his England prospects having signed for Bolton, Reo-Coker said: “Yes, definitely. Playing consistently makes a difference and I hope having come here to get consistent games, and then we will go from there.”

The 27-year-old certainly has the backing of his new manager Owen Coyle.

“We’d love to get him back to that level because I believe he’s capable of doing that,” the Bolton boss said.

“For us, he brings real Premier League experience and quality. He is strong in possession and strong in the tackle. He keeps the ball the well, keeps it moving and I think he has great football intelligence.

“This is a real opportunity and a platform for him to show everybody what we believe – that he is a top class player.”

Premier League Live: Lennon keen to land Bellamy

Celtic manager Neil Lennon hopes to contact Manchester City over the availability of striker Craig Bellamy, but admits money may be a stumbling block.

The Northern Irishman hopes to speak with representatives of the Barclays Premier League club this weekend when both teams compete in the Dublin Super Cup.

Lennon told the Daily Telegraph: “There is interest, but it is dictated to by finances. I hope to catch up with [City] while they are here and see if we can take it from there.”

Bellamy became a popular figure among the Hoops faithful during a successful loan spell in Glasgow six years ago when a Newcastle player.

The 32-year-old was loaned out to Cardiff last season but has since returned to City, who further bolstered their attacking line with the acquisition of Argentina striker Sergio Aguero on Thursday.

Premier League Live: Gill happy with United finances

Manchester United chief executive David Gill has answered parliamentary criticisms of leveraged buy-outs at football clubs by claiming the Red Devils are “very comfortable” with their financial position.

Concern over organisations borrowing money to mount takeover bids was one of the issues raised by the damning report into football governance delivered by the Culture, Media and Sport select committee. That was exactly how the Glazer family managed to secure control of the Old Trafford outfit in 2005, plunging them into huge debts that presently stand at £490million.

“With respect to Manchester United, we are very comfortable with our financial structure,” said Gill.

“We are producing record turnover and record profits and we can meet our obligations. We have been clear all along. There is money in the bank.

“Some people have not believed us but if a player is required to improve the squad and challenge for top honours, the money is there. That is still the case. We are not afraid to spend big money on players of a certain age.”

Indeed, United have already splashed out £50million on Ashley Young, David de Gea and Phil Jones, with the possibility of someone else to come if the right deal can be done. In addition, key contracts have been negotiated, with Gill confirming Antonio Valencia will sign a contract extension when United return to Manchester next week.

The Ecuador winger, who hopes to be fit for the Premier League opener at West Brom on August 14, enjoyed an outstanding first season with the Old Trafford outfit after moving from Wigan in 2009.

He then broke his ankle in a Champions League tie with Rangers, ruling him out for six months, but eventually recovered to earn himself a spot in Sir Alex Ferguson’s Champions League final starting line-up.

“We’re in the process of finalising it. He has been to the Copa America and we’ve been away but that will be sorted out next week,” said Gill.

He also confirmed talks over an extension to Javier Hernandez’s contract will begin “in the autumn”.
