Premier League Live: Chelsea make U-Turn over Serbian defender decision � reports

Chelsea have ‘not given up hope’ of securing a work permit for Serbian defender Slobodan Rajkovic.


Reports on talkSPORT three days ago claimed the Blues were set to cut their losses on the defender, who joined the club in 2005 but has been unable to make a senior appearance for the club due to work permit issues.


However, the same website now claims Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas is eager to have the six-cap international centre back involved in his first-team squad next season, and is hopeful issues over a work permit can be resolved.



Signed from OFK Beograd for a then world record fee for a player under the age of 18, Rajkovic has since spent time on loan PSV, Twente and Vitesse in the Dutch Eredivisie whilst unable to make an appearance at Stamford Bridge.

Involved in the club’s pre-season plans ahead of the coming campaign, Rajkovic scored for Chelsea in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Wycombe and then played 45 minutes against a Malaysia XI on the tour of Asia.


Should Chelsea fail in their application for a work permit however, the 22-year-old is likely to move to French Ligue 1 side Valenciennes, either on loan or in a permanent deal.

Lately I have noticed football players having tonnes of tattoos on their arms, like David Beckham, and I think they just look like idiots trying to be hard. On musicians they work cos they seem to fit their career but I find them wrong on football players. What are your opinions?

Tattoos look weird on anybody because they’re not meant to be there.

Footballers have inflated egos and probably think that having tattoos makes them even cooler than they already are, when really they just kick a ball and are nothing special.

Premier League Live: Pulis happy to wait over transfers

Stoke boss Tony Pulis is prepared to bide his time in the transfer market if necessary.


The Potters, who are in Croatia ahead of Thursday night’s Europa League third qualifying round second leg against Hajduk Split, have only recruited former Tottenham centre-back Jonathan Woodgate so far this summer.


“We’ll do our business with the clubs and people might be surprised who we do eventually end up with,” Pulis said.



“We will improve the squad before the window closes. But we’ve always done our business later in the transfer window rather than earlier.


“We have to make sure that we do our business at the right price – that is something that we have always maintained and something that we will always try to do.


“I think the closer you get to deadline day, there are better deals to be done with certain players.”

Premier League Live: Cantona: City need young stars

Manchester United legend Eric Cantona has warned Manchester City they will never match his former club until they start to spend on their academy as they have done on their first-team squad.


Once again City owner Sheikh Mansour has splashed the cash this summer, investing heavily on Sergio Aguero, Gael Clichy and Stefan Savic, with the prospect of a hefty bid for Samir Nasri likely to be lodged before the Premier League gets under way in 10 days’ time.


But Cantona, believes it will become a massive handicap unless City’s once famed youth policy is restored to its former glory, and said: “United are the best team. I don’t know how City work, maybe they are working on the academy, but they want to spend millions to buy players to build a team.”



He continued: “They have been successful because they won the FA Cup but if they only want to do that, they will not be as strong as Manchester United. United work on the long term, with young talent.”


Cantona also launched a broadside at Carlos Tevez and Mario Balotelli, who have this summer both criticised the lifestyle in Manchester.


“They don’t like the place?” he laughed.


“It depends upon where they come from. If they come from Milan, maybe. Also it depends why they have come.


“I had a great time here and a great time in the city but the most important thing for me was to play for the best club in the world, with the best players in the world.


“I was a professional player. I didn’t try to find a city to enjoy it.


“The greatest time you can have is on the pitch.”

How many times is a football used in professional football?

Just sat here watching the football with hubby, not something I know lots about and just wondered…… In football (premier league/fa cup/world cup) is the football used brand new and is it only used once i.e they have a new ball for every match?

A ball is used in one game only, and several balls are used in a game. After that the club will use them for training.


There needs to be more than one ball available in a game, if a ball goes out of play, a new ball can be used more quickly than retrieving the old one. Also some football grounds are small, and the ball is likely to leave the ground.

Premier League Live: Goodwillie completes Blackburn move

Blackburn have completed the signing of Scotland striker David Goodwillie from Dundee United.


The deal was confirmed by the Barclays Premier League club in a statement on their official website.


Goodwillie, 22, has signed a four-year contract.


Blackburn did not disclose the transfer fee involved, however Goodwillie is believed to be costing Blackburn an initial £2million.


He was reportedly wanted by Blackpool and Cardiff before the battle for his services came down to a contest between Rangers and Blackburn.



Blackburn agreed a fee with United on Friday, and although Rangers made several efforts to strike a deal, they did not match their SPL rivals’ demands.


The structure of payments was reported to have been a stumbling block for the Scottish champions.


Goodwillie underwent a medical with Blackburn on Tuesday and his arrival at Ewood Park will come as a fresh blow to Rangers, who have been knocked out by Malmo in the third qualifying round of the Champions League.


Blackburn said in their statement: “Rovers have seen off fierce competition from a host of other clubs to make their first signing of the summer.”

Premier League Live: Malbranque joins St Etienne

St Etienne have confirmed the signing of Steed Malbranque from Sunderland.


The Ligue 1 outfit have agreed a two-year deal for the 31-year-old midfielder, who returns to his native France for an undisclosed fee.


A statement on www.asse.fr read: “It’s official. Steed Malbranque is a St Etienne player. The midfielder is committed to ASSE for two seasons.”


Sunderland manager Steve Bruce admitted earlier on Wednesday that Malbranque, who began his career at St Etienne’s fierce rivals Lyon, was on his way from the club.



“Of course, Steed has done remarkably well for the club over the last two or three years, but it’s maybe time that he moves on and we wish him well,” Bruce told The Sunderland Echo.

Premier League Live: Warnock eyes further new faces

QPR manager Neil Warnock is hoping to bring in a further three signings ahead of the start of the Barclays Premier League next week.


The R’s won the npower Championship last season, ending their 15-year absence from the top flight, but despite securing promotion, Warnock was frustrated in early attempts to bolster his squad before completing the signings of Jay Bothroyd, Kieron Dyer and Danny Gabbidon.


Blackpool striker DJ Campbell and Southampton winger Jason Puncheon could soon be joining the trio at Loftus Road, with the former Sheffield United boss telling Sky Sports News: “Well, we’re talking to a number of players. We’re hoping to bring in two or maybe three players in the next week before the start of the season.”



He continued: “We’ve gone slowly about our job but I think we’ve got some good players in and we’re looking to bring two or three other good players in. We haven’t gone silly and signed them straight away but we’ve been working hard behind the scenes.


“So it’s very encouraging and the way we’ve been playing in Italy was very good against different types of opponents but you’re going to get that in the Premier League.


“There’s something different every week isn’t there so I’m sure we can ruffle a few feathers.”


QPR’s pre-season preparation has been overshadowed by off-field antics throughout the summer and the latest development at the Shepherds Bush club is that Malaysian businessman Tony Fernandes is in discussions with co-owner Bernie Ecclestone and the Formula One supremo’s business partner Flavio Briatore.


But when asked whether Fernandes’ takeover could prove a headache, Warnock responded: “No, not really. I only met him for an hour with Flavio before the game at Atalanta.


“It was a very enjoyable conversation but we didn’t have a long chat on that. That side of the game is nothing to do with me really, I just try and concentrate on the football side and try and bring one or two players into the club.


“In fairness, I think I’ve got three very good players and if we can get two or three on top of that, then I think we finish the business just at the right time before that first game of the season.”

Premier League Live: Malbranque set for St Etienne move

Steed Malbranque appears set to return to his native France after Sunderland boss Steve Bruce admitted the midfielder’s future lay elsewhere.


Bruce indicated he is willing to let the 31-year-old leave the Stadium of Light, with reports in France surfacing on Wednesday that he had already undergone a medical at St Etienne.


He told the Sunderland Echo: “Of course, Steed has done remarkably well for the club over the last two or three years, but it’s maybe time that he moves on and we wish him well. I think it’s in advanced talks so maybe there’ll be something to report there soon.”



He continued: “We’ve decided to say okay, which is inevitable with the amount of people we’ve brought in and the balance of the squad.”


Should Malbranque sign it would end a 10-year stay in English football that has seen him appear for Fulham and Tottenham before joining the Black Cats in 2008.


Bruce revealed Marcos Angeleri and George McCartney could also follow the Frenchman through the exit door in the coming days as he looks to balance the books after bringing in a host of new names.


Bruce has already welcomed the likes of John O’Shea and Wes Brown from Manchester United while Craig Gardner, Sebastian Larsson and Connor Wickham have also moved to the north-east.


“I would envisage there’ll be two or three leaving the club in the next few days,” Bruce added.


“It looks like Angeleri might be going back to Argentina and there’s a possibility that George McCartney might be going out too.”

Premier League Live: Spurs striker 'most likely of five' to leave

Tottenham Hotspur striker Peter Crouch has been tipped to leave White Hart Lane first this summer.


The claims come from strike partner Roman Pavlyuchenko’s agent, who suggests that interest in the England international will see Harry Redknapp cash-in on the forward.


“I expect to talk nearer to the transfer window’s closing time,” Oleg Artemov told the Daily Star.


“At the moment he is too busy. He needs to sell players and to buy new ones. Two or three teams are interested in Peter Crouch.



“So he is most likely to be the one of the five Spurs attackers to leave.”


Stoke City, Sunderland and Everton have all been linked with Crouch in the transfer window, although it’s the Russian forward who has been more heavily rumoured to be making a White Hart Lane exit this summer.


Club’s from Pavlyuchenko’s homeland are thought to have taken an interest in the Spurs striker, although SkySports claims Artemov is eager to hold talks with Daniel Levy over a potential new contract in north London.

Redknapp revealed last month that he would need to sell players before making new signings at Tottenham Hotspur, with a striker signing thought to be the manager’s priority.

Premier League Live: Gunners 'poised' to land Spanish U17 starlet � reports

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is set to make another Spanish raid, with reports claiming the Gunners are ‘poised’ to sign Real Madrid teenager Jose Rodriguez.


The 16-year-old could follow in the footsteps of Jon Miquel Toral and Héctor Bellerín, who have moved to the Emirates from Barcelona earlier in the summer.


Rodriguez would also be following in the footsteps of Ignasi Miquel and Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas were he to join the Gunners, moving to north London at an early age from his homeland.



It’s reported in The Daily Mail that Rodriguez impressed Arsenal chief scout in Spain, Francisco Cagigao, during the recent U17 World Club Championship in Madrid, and was invited to the club to view the facilities and youth team quarters in England.

The report goes on to claim that the youngster held talks with Fabregas, who advised the midfielder that his progression would be helped at Arsenal, who would look to take the player through its youth and reserve team ranks before challenging for a first team place.

Premier League Live: Levein: We can compete

Scotland manager Craig Levein expects his side to continue their recent signs of improvement when they take on Denmark in a warm-up for their crucial Euro 2012 qualifier against the Czech Republic.


Levein’s faith in his players has improved dramatically since he deployed his infamous 4-6-0 formation in a 1-0 defeat in Prague in October last year. That increasing confidence will be tested against the Danes in Glasgow next month as Scotland prepare for a Hampden double-header against the Czechs and Lithuania which will define their play-off hopes.


He said: “It will be a tough game, I’m under no illusions. But we have improved a hell of a lot in the last year or so and I expect that improvement to continue.”



Denmark, who qualified for the 2010 World Cup, are ranked 21st in the world and sit level on points with Portugal and Norway at the top of their Euro 2012 qualification group.


Denmark’s squad includes Liverpool midfielder Christian Poulsen, former Ajax winger Dennis Rommedahl, now at Olympiakos, and Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner.


The Czechs are ranked 38th with the Scots in 61st place, so Levein has set up a testing encounter.


But he believes encouraging performances since the trip to Prague, which notably included a narrow defeat against Spain and comfortable victories over Northern Ireland and Wales, give his side hope of competing.


“We’re taking on a tough team,” Levein added. “You know that when you look at their squad, they have some well-known and exciting players in their team.


“As close to the Czech Republic match, I wanted a team with comparative ability and who play in a similar manner. Denmark certainly fit the bill.


“I think it’s an exciting game – they are doing as well as they have done in a while.”

FC Toronto continued with their impressive pre-season form with a 14 nil win against Sunday league side Waters Edge at the King Richard school ground. On Sunday 24th July 2011. FC Toronto dominated from the start with their usual passing game and the team which is unrecognisable from the old FC Toronto raced into a 8 nil half time lead with four goals from Ismael Sanha, Nick Simister, and Tom Gray. Even despite Manger Gary Louca bringing on several substitutes at half time and Waters Edge trying to strengthen their side FC Toronto where still way too strong and added a further 6 goals. FC Toronto who have now only lost two out of their last 21 games whilst Gary Louca has been in charge, have by far much tougher opposition coming up with games against Liphook reserves this Saturday 4pm kick off and several Sunday premier teams and finally FC Castle the Havant Sunday cup winners. Its been a nine month rebuilding revolution at FC Toronto with numerous players now catching the eye of the big local semi pro clubs. Manager Gary Louca quoted as saying ” At FC Toronto we can’t compete at the moment with the semi pro clubs with stadiums and those who pay wages, but we have a long term vision to have own ground and eventually stadium. Its is rumoured that there could be major financial investment coming into FC Toronto from an overseas and UK based consortium, but at the moment Gary Louca is keeping tight lipped about this, preferring to concentrate on the progression of the team …

My 4th season with Huddersfield, Premier League match against Birmingham (well I’m in the Premiership since 3rd season but that’s not important right now ':P' ). Anyway, Bentley scores a goal for me in the stoppage time of the first half to make it 2:1 (weee!) Then they just place the ball on the centre and start a superb attacking move that ALMOST finishes with a Michel goal, haha! Well, he hits the net, but unfortunately for them, as the ball is flying towards my goal, the referee suddenly blows his whistle to end the first half xD Saved by the bell! The scoreline didn’t change until the final whistle so I won 2:1.

Premier League Live: United scouts dispatched over Argentine starlet � reports

Manchester United have dispatched scouts to watch Benfica midfielder Nicolas Gaitan, according to reports.


Record claims Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson has been tracking the player since his time at Boca Juniors, where Gaitan developed before moving to Portugal in 2010.


A three-cap international for Argentina, the report claims Manchester United will continue to monitor the player ahead of a potential move in January, despite the interest being shown in the current transfer window.


David Gill confirmed that, whilst the Old Trafford outfit have already made three additions this summer, with Ashley Young, David De Gea and Phil Jones joining Manchester United, the club could still make one more move this summer.



Wesley Sneijder is reportedly the club’s top target, with various reports in the British press today claiming a Manchester United offer has been accepted by Inter Milan.

Premier League Live: Latics snap up Jones

Wigan have announced the signing of former Wolves midfielder David Jones.


The 26-year-old, who left Molineux when his contract expired at the end of last season, has signed for the Latics after a successful trial period.


He told the club’s official website: “I’m delighted to have sorted out my future. Roberto Martinez is a great manager to work for and I’ve loved every minute of training so far. I already feel settled here.”


He added: “I’d like to thank everyone at Wolves for their support when I was there and to say goodbye to a great set of fans there. But I’m a Wigan player now and I’m really looking forward to the new season and proving to the gaffer he has made a good choice.”



Martinez clearly believes that is the case, telling the website: “Technically he is very gifted, shows good personality on the pitch and already has solid experience of the Barclays Premier League behind him, with the best years of his career still ahead.


“Dave has connected well with the group during pre-season, he has shown a great attitude towards work and will certainly bring something different to the squad.


“We’ve been impressed with the levels of his work in training and everyone’s excited to be welcoming him to our club.”


Jones made 66 Wolves appearances in three seasons, helping them into the top flight and playing a part in their survival there.


He had previously played for Derby, signing permanently after playing for the Rams in one of a number of his loan spells away from first club Manchester United.

Premier League Live: Agent: United in the running for Brazilian star

The agent of Brazil international Paulo Henrique Ganso claims Manchester United are one of three clubs vying for the signature of his client.


According to Mario Miele, AC Milan are also contesting the Barclays Premier League champions for the Santos midfielder, while Qatari-backed Paris Saint-Germain are leading the race.


“On Ganso it’s PSG, then Milan and Man Utd,” Miele told calciomercatonews.com. “My impression is PSG will soon meet the buy-out clause.”



Ganso has reportedly been identified by Sir Alex Ferguson as a potential alternative to Inter Milan playmaker Wesley Sneijder, as the United boss attempts to bring a replacement for Paul Scholes to Old Trafford.

However, it was claimed on Tuesday that United had agreed a fee with Inter for the Holland international, with Sneijder now having to take a wage-cut to complete a move to Old Trafford.


Meanwhile, as well as supposedly beating United to Ganso, PSG are said to be considering a bid in the region of £18 million for Dimitar Berbatov.

Premier League Live: Baggies confirm Hargreaves interest

West Brom boss Roy Hodgson has confirmed the club’s interest in signing Owen Hargreaves if he proves his fitness.


Hodgson admits Albion’s technical and sporting director Dan Ashworth has been in contact with the former Manchester United player, but Hodgson will leave it to medical experts to decide whether Hargreaves will be fit enough to return at Premier League level. Hargreaves posted fitness videos of himself on YouTube after being released by United at the end of last season.


Hodgson said: “I’ve not actually spoken to Owen but he’s been communicating with Dan Ashworth. Obviously, we’re monitoring, like several other clubs, a player of his quality and the situation with him. If the situation developed where it’s clear he is no longer injured and is capable of playing Premier League football I don’t think we’ll be the only club interested in his services.”



Hodgson added: “I don’t have an update on what the next move will be.


“There was some talk that because he was in Vancouver and we were a couple of days in Portland (on a pre-season tour) that he might be able to pop down and see us – but that wasn’t possible.


“He looked good on the YouTube video. But I’m no expert on the subject and it would take medical experts to made a decision with regards to capabilities.


“It’s not possible for me and my naked eye to make a decision on that.”

Premier League Live: Spurs can take United target, on one condition � reports

Real Madrid have told Harry Redknapp that he can buy Lassana Diarra, but only on the condition that Tottenham give the Spanish giants first option to buy Gareth Bale in 2013, according to Metro.


Bale has long been a target for Real Madrid, after the winger shone against the best in Europe in Spurs’ Champions League campaign last season.


But Tottenham are now looking toward a season in the Europa League, and are facing problems with attracting top talent as a result.

Bale has continually insisted he is committed to Tottenham, but the Wales international’s contract runs out at the club in 2013, and Madrid want the ability to purchase the 22-year-old if he continues to get better.


Manchester United have been linked numerous times to Diarra over the summer, but Sir Alex Ferguson’s interest in the winger cooled after he signed England international winger Ashley Young.


And with United not chasing the star anymore, Tottenham won’t have to contend with a club that can offer the ability to win trophies in England and Europe next season.


Diarra is reportedly hopeful of securing a deal in the Barclays Premier League this summer, and with Tottenham hoping to steal the march on bigger clubs like United and challenge for Champions League qualification next season, Redknapp may indeed decide that it’s better to take on Diarra and keep Bale for the next two years.

Premier League Live: Spurs dealt official striker blow after Arsenal winger target sale

Tottenham Hotspur striker target Giuseppe Rossi is set to stay at Villarreal this summer.


The Italian international forward has been heavily linked with a move away from the Yellow Submarine in the transfer window, with clubs across Europe interested in signing the former Manchester United player.


Harry Redknapp has been one of those monitoring the player’s situation at El Madrigal, with the Spurs boss failing to land Rossi in January.



Despite signing a new five-year deal in the same month, the Tottenham Hotspur target was still tipped to make a move away from La Liga as the Spanish side look to solve their financial difficulties.


However, the sale of Santi Cazorla appears to have ended Spurs’ interest in the player, with agent Federico Pastorello telling Sky Sport Italia the player is off the transfer window.


“Giuseppe Rossi has officially been taken off the market after they sold Santi Cazorla to Malaga,” Pastorello told Sky Sport Italia.


“The economical problems which the club had have now been resolved by that (£16.5million) transfer. Nevertheless, this decision has liberated Rossi as he’s now just focusing on playing football and scoring goals.


“He’s not used to being at the centre of such negotiations and tension. He wanted Juventus, but he’s accepted the position taken by the president of Villarreal.”

Cazorla was heavily linked with a move to Arsenal this summer, with Arsene Wenger reportedly monitoring the 26-year-old back in July.


The Gunners are keen to add a player in the position, with uncertainty remaining over the future of Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas and French international Samir Nasri at the Emirates.


After missing out on Cazorla, the Arsenal boss instanty turned his attention to Cazorla compatriot Juan Mata, although a bid was reportedly rejected for the player last night.
